‘noches tranquilas’ is the first instalment in the 'Waves' trilogy. A short diary film, it was completed at Concordia University’s Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema during the 2014-2015 academic year. Continuing with the themes of home, identity, and the individual’s subjectivity, the film was born from the idea to attempt to accurately present an image of my hometown to my partner, a foreigner whose experience of North America relies mostly on visual and popular culture.

After returning from three months abroad, the film acted as an exercise for myself to rediscover the home that I had returned to in Montreal. Moments of my every day were presented as if from the absent eye of my partner, or an anonymous voyeur, making the images both intimate and unfamiliar Drawing inspiration from Left Bank essay films and the American short stories of Raymond Carver, the film’s images show a cold, bare Canadian winter landscape, with its sound echoing the waves of the Mediterranean sea. Struggling between my Italian Mediterranean heritage and my Canadian nationality, I exist between both.
